Hades is the Greek God of the Underworld, who ruled over Tartarus and the realm of the dead. Where most gods were revered and worshiped, he was feared. Many Greeks chose not to refer to him at all, so as not to draw attention to themselves before it was their time to enter the underworld. However, he was a firm but fair ruler, and he was also the god of wealth and plenty, representing the abundance of riches beneath the earth's surface—both in its fertile soil and deep mines. This connection to the riches of the earth made his marriage to Persephone, the goddess of spring, a particularly fruitful partnership.
