Medusa was described as being a beautiful maiden and a priestess at the temple of Athena. Poseidon was enamored by her, and pursued Medusa, leading her to flee to her goddesses temple where she was defiled by Poseidon. Angered by this and unable to punish Poseidon himself due to his standing as a powerful god, Athena cursed Medusa with a gaze that turned men to stone and turned her hair to snakes. (Depending on the lore you're referencing, the snake hair did not begin being referenced until layer years). There are some tellings that suggest that this curse was meant to serve as protection for Medusa so no man could defile her in that way again. 
 
Along with being turned into a gorgon herself, her sisters were also turned into gorgons. Medusa was the only mortal gorgon. Her sisters Euryale and Stheno were immortal despite all three of them having been born from the primordial sea-god Phorcys and the sea-monster Ceto. They are only mentioned in the tale of Perseus, giving pursuit to him after he slays Medusa but being unable to catch up to him due to him being adorned in Hades' invisibility cap and Hermes' winged sandals . 
 
Medusa's death results in the birth of Chrysaor and Pegasus, and her head was taken by Perseus to be gifted to Athena. Even after death her blood was seen as being both a powerful poison and a potent cure-all, and locks of her hair were able to still strike fear and unease into any who gazed upon them. 
 
Medusa's symbol is used as protection to ward off negativity and dangerous threats. In battle, her image was often set upon the shields of soldiers. Survivors of domestic trauma and SA often get her visage as a tattoo as a symbol of strength and empowerment over what they have overcome.
